Friends and Family in the new Take Ten!

The Autumn 2016 issue of Take Ten magazine came out on September 1st, and I went to my local Barnes & Noble store right after I was done teaching school to pick up my copy. My sister-in-law Sherry had let me know that she has two cards published in this issue, and I was also happy to see that my card-artist friend and fellow educator Suzanne Delaware also has two of her cards included. It’s always a pleasure to see familiar names and favorite artwork among the pages of Take Ten and The Stampers’ Sampler – something to anticipate every few months!

In both cases, these cards made by Sherry were layout submissions from past challenges, so it is gratifying to all of us that even though we might submit cards for a challenge and not have it chosen, we are sometimes surprised to see our cards appear months or even years later in the “general cards” category, probably when the colors or other details are right for a page that the staff is putting together at that time.

Suzanne’s cards are fun and colorful, and often vintage or retro in style.

I’d like to invite Sherry and Suzanne to tell us about their cards in the “comment” section, and also share anything about their work in general; favorite supplies, materials, techniques, etc.

Hello! So very flattered to be acknowledged on Valory’s blog. My favorite card making materials are vintage–especially paper ephemera that I can add realia to. Also I love finding unique paper that reminds me of brads, stickers, ribbons I have in my “stash”. I love that the “sky is the limit” when it comes to card making!

Hi Suzanne, thanks for writing in and telling us more about your art and papercrafting process. I know that your vintage baseball cards in the Summer 2015 Take Ten really caught my eye and that was the start of a friendly online association that I have enjoyed immensely!

WOW! How exciting & congrats to Sherry & Suzanne!! Something I could only dream of. Of course the first step would be to send a card in. But I just don’t think I’m on the level of Sherry & Valory. I have often complimented a card at Valory’s to hear it was made by Sherry. A compliment deserved for both to see their cards in the magazine.

Thanks for the congratulations, Susan, to both Sherry and Suzanne! Yes, you have seen some of Sherry’s beautiful cards on display at my house. And you’re right about first step – you’ve just got to send something in! And then it gets addictive 🙂

How exciting! We don’t have that magazine over here. I love all the pages you have shown though – what a talented bunch!

Thanks for sharing in the excitement! Yes, it’s fun to get a surprise in the mailbox – they send a free copy if your cards are published in that issue.

Yes; the first time I think I almost fainted with shock and joy! It was 2 1/2 years ago; my bird template card “Free as a Bird,” that was printed in the Winter 2014 Stampers’ Sampler. The two magazines run different challenges; templates, layouts and sometimes specific colors and other themes. I like having a starting point to work from, although you can send in anything you want.

I have never submitted anything to a magazine – am way too chicken! Well done for being venturous!
